GTEC GOALS -

  1. Enrich the educational experiences and skills of African American graduate students to prepare them for future careers in academics, industry, and government research settings
  2. Enhance the professional skills of grad students to increase the likelihood of success and completion of grad school
  3. Increase the interest in, and likelihood of, African American graduate students entering careers in biomedical sciences following degree and program completion

JHS GTEC



Jackson State University was recently awarded a five year contract to implement the Jackson Heart Study (JHS) Community Outreach Center (CORC).  The contract period is from 8/16/2013-8/15/2014 for a total amount of 3,086,081.  The CORC is an expansion of the highly successful operation of the Community Partnership Office (CPO), in the Jackson State University Coordinating Center, which operated from 1999-2013.  During the era of the CPO, relationships and partnerships were developed with over 100 churches, community based organizations, governmental agencies, private non-profit organizations, other institutions of higher learning and individual partners.  A community based participatory research (CBPR) component has been added under this new contract period.

  1. Increase the pool of minority students entering the health related professions
  2. Establish two programs SLAM (Science, Language Arts and Mathematics) program during the summer for high school students
  3. And the JHS Scholars program for Tougaloo College students

Graduate Training and Education Center (UMMC)
The John D. Bower School of Population Health at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) was recently awarded a new contract for the Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center (GTEC). The UMMC GTEC contract has been awarded for five years starting August 13, 2018.

Goals and Objectives
 
The overall goals of the UMMC GTEC are to: 1) strengthen the research skills of graduate- and health professional students from groups underrepresented* in biomedical sciences to better prepare them for their professional careers, and to pursue careers in biomedical sciences; and 2) advance the science of research training and education of graduate students. The 2-year graduate-level certificate program will focus on cardiovascular epidemiology, cardiovascular health, minority health, health disparities, and careers in biomedical science by establishing the Robert Smith, MD Graduate Scholars Program, honoring one of the heroes of health and health care in Mississippi, Dr. Robert Smith.
